10 Best Netflix Alternatives in Canada: Streaming Services Comparison

https://cansumer.ca/best-netflix-alternatives/

In This Guide

There are plenty of online video streaming platforms available, but many are not available to Canadian viewers because they are US based. What are the best streaming sites in Canada?
This guide covers the 10 most popular Netflix alternatives available in Canada and lists their availability, the price you will pay for each and whether or not they can be viewed offline.

1) CraveTV

Platform Availability
The best options for viewing CraveTV are through Xbox One, Android and iOS. Their Apple TV app is a bit rough around the edges.
Pricing
$7.99 per month. At its inception, CraveTV was offered together with a subscription to Bell television. A CRTC ruling made Rogers, Shaw and Bell offer their streaming services to all of the subscribers. At the time Rogers and Shaw had their own platform called “Shomi”.
Exclusive Content
CraveTV offers old HBO content and some newer content from Showtime in addition to some of its own exclusive content including LetterKenny and Indian Detective. Some feel that CraveTV’s value does not justify the price that is charged but when you consider that some U.S. based streaming platforms such as Hulu charge extra for HBO content, you are getting a good deal here.

2) Amazon Prime Video

Platform Availability
Amazon Prime Video can be viewed on iOS, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Android, Wii U and on most smart TVs. Some of these apps are not yet available in Canada, but according to Amazon they are working on it. Amazon and Apple are not very compatible with each other so there are gaps in some of the applications including the absence of the Amazon Prime Video app for the Cupertino which is the 4th Generation Apple TV. The app is also missing from the Google Chromecast platform.
Pricing
If you are a subscriber of Amazon Prime, this service is offered to you with no extra cost. If not, it is offered for $79 per year which is extremely reasonable.
Exclusive Content
There is a lot less content here than is offered on Netflix, but there are a few programs including Transparent, which has won some awards, Man in the High Castle, a history series, and The Grand Tour.
While the service has far less content than competing global platform Netflix, Amazon does have a few standout shows, including the revisionist history series Man in the High Castle, award-winning Transparent and The Grand Tour.
Offline Viewing
Content from the Amazon Prime library can be downloaded for viewing offline, but all downloads expire after 48 hours. This can be a little bit annoying if you download something and then don’t watch it right away.

3) Club illico

Platform Availability
You can view Club Illico on most tablets, Android and on iOS.
Pricing
This service is based in Quebec and run by Vidéotron and offers a free trial for the first month with a fee of $9.99 per month thereafter.
Exclusive Content
Some of the exclusive content that is provided with this service includes shows such as The Expanse, Blue Moon and The Avengers. It also features a significant selection of French language content.

Platform Availability
You can access Shudder through Android, iOS and PC.
Pricing

10) Spuul.com

Platform Availability
